Rubenstein v. Lippe: The Ultimate Football Rivalry

  • Beth Samuel Jewish Center 810 Kennedy Drive Ambridge, PA 15003 USA (map)

In the mid 1920s through the 1940s, there was no bigger high school rivalry than Ambridge vs Aliquippa. The schools were lead by Moe Rubenstein (Bridgers) and Nate Lippe (Quipps), two young Jewish coaches who met as teammates at Geneva College, reportedly feuded over the attentions of a girl, and became fierce rivals who disliked each other on and off the field! Both have been honored by the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame for Western PA, and the Bridgers now play in the Moe Rubenstein Stadium, just a few blocks from the synagogue.

Join us for bagels and coffee, and then listen to Eric Lidji, Director of the Rauh Jewish History Program & Archives at the Heinz History Center, tell the incredible tale of sports drama that helped to shape the communities in which they served.
