We will kick off the solemn Days of Awe with a lighthearted Selichot Dinner & Movie celebrating Jewish love, marriage … and matchmaking!

We’ll start off with a hearty chicken dinner. Then we’ll watch a fun, short documentary, brought to us by Suzannah Warlick, the filmmaker who brought us “Passage to Sweden”. “Match & Marry” explores matchmaking, dating, and marriage in today’s Orthodox Jewish community. The roles of husbands and wives are also explored. The documentary features several ‘When Harry Met Sally’ style interviews with real couples, showing the humor and humanity in Jewish culture! Afterwards, we’ll lead a lively discussion about the film.

We also have copies of the book Don’t Forget to Write as a companion read. This funny and exhilirating book features Marilyn, a young woman in 1960 who is shipped her off to her great-aunt Ada (a matchmaker in Philadephia) after getting caught making out with the rabbi’s son. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. As the summer unfolds, Marilyn discovers a freedom she never knew existed and learns from Ada that she doesn’t have to settle.
